Ability Levels
Using Ability Levels
Ability levels are used as a guide. They allow you to find cyclists of a similar standard for a particular ride you are looking to do. Try to be as honest as possible, and if in doubt choose a level below, if its too easy you can always set yourself at a higher level next time.
Conversely, if you are at a higher level but are looking for a more sociable ride, or are recovering, then feel free to join a lower level ride, just please don't complain if the pace is too slow and instead use your experience to help.

You like to take things easy or you are just starting your cycling journey. Cat 1 is for social rides, people returning from injury, of those that just want to get out and about on two wheels, whatever type of bike that may be.
At Cat 2 you could be on a road bike or a hybrid and feel comfortable holding 14/15mph on flat roads.
Cat 3's are more likely to be on a road bike, ride consistently at 16/17 mph on the flats. You'll most likely feel comfortable riding 20-25 miles and may want to push yourself more.
Cat 4 is likely to be a little quicker again, with 17/18 mph feeling ok on flat ground, with your general solo rides around 25-30 miles.
Cat 5 rides are likely to be quicker or further. 19/20 mph should feel ok on flat road, especially riding in a group. Likely to ride 25-35 miles if going solo, but also comfortable going further, or on more hilly terrain.
By Cat 6 you are likely to be a good club rider already and want to add some extra rides or are perhaps just looking for some new road mates. 22mph and above is fine on flat grounds and you are happy to ride tightly in a group.
